Roxy Ball Room – Fun times in a unique Leeds bar

In December 2013 a unique new bar opened in the city centre that seemed ideal for Leeds. Combining a good night out with a fun choice of games, Roxy Ball Room fed a craving and filled a gap that nobody knew was there. This special venue has proved a huge success in the city and a visit there immediately shows why.

The idea behind Roxy Ball Room was that going out should be a social experience to interact with other people, and what better way to encourage this than to play with each other? Yes, there would be a bar area to relax in, but there would also be a fine mixture of games to take part in and free those adult inhibitions!

The quartet of sports on offer at Roxy Ball Room are pool, ping-pong, mini-golf and beer-pong. There are several impeccable table-tennis and pool tables available to book in advance or hope are free on your visit; there’s a 9 hole mini-golf ‘Swingers Club’, complete with safari-themed giant giraffes, elephants and gorillas; and topping off the ethos is the raucous drinking game beer-pong, in which players throw balls into beer cups that their opponents must then sup – definitely worth a try!

Whilst the activities provide its USP, there is no feeling of pressure at Roxy Ball Room about what to join in with or how to behave. The giant open space separates bar area and gaming areas, which avoids balls in drinks and keeps atmospheres both lively and comfortable. The interior itself is expertly stripped back, that of an industrial warehouse emitting a youthful cool, albeit one frequented by a whole range of ages.

With the focus on the array of entertainment, Roxy Ball Room could easily have neglected its core, but in fact the standalone bar keeps drinkers and eaters happy without the games. There is a sophisticated bar menu serving freshly-made pizzas, proper burgers, delicious cocktails and local craft beers, all of which is soundtracked by classic rock and indie favourites until the early hours.

On the other hand, those that want to get stuck in can pot, bat and swing along to their heart’s content. For the full experience there is a VIP room, which groups and parties can hire out for bespoke events. This fun format seems perfect for corporate meetings, teambuilding, special occasions or just a night out with friends to show who’s best with a stick in one hand and a glass in the other.

After 18 months, Roxy Ball Room has a strong following and is regularly filled with Leeds-folk looking for that different sociable night out, but there remains many more city-goers yet to experience the joys of letting out their inner-child. Give it a go, it might just do you good. After all, a Roxy a day helps you eat, drink and play.
