Northern Ballet

A Northern powerhouse of inventive dance

Set up in 1969 by Canadian-born Laverne Meyer, Northern Ballet has dazzled audiences ever since with its bold, mesmerising and emotionally charged ballet performances. Focusing as much on the ‘theatre’ as the ‘ballet’, the company are masters of using space to perfectly complement the beauty on stage.

And what a space it is! A purpose-built, six-storey facility located on Quarry Hill, Northern Ballet operate in a vibrant and exciting venue that has more going on than you would think possible. With dance classes almost always underway in their seven large dance studios, performances in their 230-seat Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre, and exhibitions in their atrium, there’s plenty of ballet to go around, whether you’re looking to perform or spectate.

One of their primary goals is inclusion. Bold and confident in their approach, Northern Ballet engages, involves and moves audiences from all walks of life through passionate story-telling, as well as an absolute commitment to their leading role as international ambassadors for world-class dance. With their full-length ballets appealing to as many people as possible, Northern Ballet are constantly seeking out new audiences, regularly touring throughout the UK and overseas to make all audiences feel they are part of the Northern Ballet family.

Three time consecutive winner of the Audience Award, the only award voted for by the public, Northern Ballet are an undoubtable success story of Leeds, and one you should absolutely be a part of.
